(Summary)
As the clock strikes ten, a young girl sneaks out of her nursery for a late night snack of fruit and chocolate, which may be the cause of the strange dream that follows. On her return to the nursery, the Sandman comes to life from the nursery mural, and sends her in a dream to Toyland, inhabited by fairyland characters. A trio of identical heralds sing her a welcome song, but also warn her of the Beast she must avoid, lest he eat her.The girl witnesses a toy parade and is smitten with a toy soldier ("Ain't he cute?"). The soldier takes her to Fairytale Land, where they open a huge book titled "Beauty and the Beast" and, reading the text, sing a song about a girl menaced by a monster. When they turn the page, the huge, shaggy, half-human Beast leaps out of the book and seizes the girl. The toy soldier sends a toy airplane to attack the Beast, and tries to fire a cannon at him, but these tactics prove ineffective. And just as it appears that the girl is doomed, she awakens on the floor of her nursery, and when she realizes that it was all a bad dream, she leaps into her crib and cowers under the covers as the flap of her pajamas falls open, revealing her bare buttocks. One of the most beautiful and faithful versions ever made. It inspired many other versions including Walt Disney's to want to make his own version and his orginal designs. Cocteau's version also inspired a scene in ALW's Phantom of the Opera 04 film. Based on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont bridged and revised version 1756.

A widowed and ruined merchant lives with his three daughters. Julie (Zdena Studenková), the youngest, asks him to bring her a rose. On the way to the village, he falls asleep on his horse while crossing an enchanted forest. He wakes up in front of a disturbing castle, populated by strange creatures and picks a white rose in the park where he meets a bloodthirsty being (Vlastimil Harapes), half-man, half-falcon, who sentences him to death. His only chance of survival would be for one of his daughters to sacrifice herself, who would have to agree to remain a prisoner of the Beast for eternity. But the merchant refuses and agrees to die. Julie is the only one of the three daughters that chooses to save her father's life. She goes to the Haunted Wood's Castle where she meets the Beast. He has no qualms about killing Julie, but her beauty prevents him from doing so. Although Julie is forbidden to look at the Beast, she starts to fall in love with him and the love rescues the Beast from his curse.

(Summary)
A wealthy merchant leads a comfortable life with his two sons and three daughters, particularly relying on his youngest daughter, Beauty, who is the family's caretaker. Despite her selflessness, Beauty often contemplates her own future beyond her familial duties. Their life takes a drastic turn when the merchant loses his fortune during a storm at sea, forcing the family to abandon their opulent lifestyle and relocate to the countryside, where Beauty continues to shoulder the responsibility of caring for her siblings. Hearing of a potential return of their wealth, the merchant promises his children gifts, but Beauty only desires a rose. When he ventures to recover wealth, the merchant visits a magnificent castle, where he is treated well by an unseen host. However, upon plucking a rose from the enchanted garden, he incurs the wrath of the Beast—formerly the host—who demands Beauty as punishment. Reluctantly, Beauty's father agrees, and she is taken to the castle where the Beast compensates her father with gold and horses. In the castle, Beauty experiences solitude for the first time and begins to understand the nature of the Beast, who possesses magical powers that fulfill her desires. The Beast persistently proposes to her, asking if she loves him at every dinner, but she declines each time, dreaming of the prince she longs for, whose portrait she discovers in the castle. As time passes, Beauty grows fond of the castle but misses her family. The Beast allows her to visit them, with the dire condition of returning in one month, warning that he will perish if she does not return on time. While spending time with her family, they begin to learn self-sufficiency, prompting Beauty to think of her obligations to the Beast. When she eventually returns, she finds the Beast in a weakened state due to her absence. Heartbroken, Beauty realizes her deep feelings for him and finally accepts his marriage proposal, uttering "yes." This declaration breaks the curse binding the Beast and restores him to his true form as the prince from her dreams. The transformation brings back his former subjects, and Beauty's family is allowed to visit her. Ultimately, Beauty and the prince marry, solidifying her position as his beloved princess.
